In 2009, Gundersen Health System set out on a bold mission: to power its operations with local, renewable energy. By 2014, they achieved it. Based in La Crosse, Wisconsin, Gundersen became a national leader in healthcare sustainability, and Alan Eber was there almost from the start. First as Manager of Engineering and Energy and later as Director of Gundersen Envision, Alan led the organization’s energy and sustainability efforts.
Alan joins host Josh Dorfman to share how Gundersen spearheaded a mix of renewable energy projects that included wind, solar, geothermal, landfill gas, cow manure, and even methane from a local brewery to slash its carbon footprint. The result? $5 million in annual energy savings, improved public health in the surrounding communities, and reduced healthcare costs for patients. Now, as CEO of Eneration, Alan is helping other healthcare systems follow in Gundersen’s footsteps toward a healthy, emission-free future.
